About

A Brief History

In 1992, Arnold Schwarzenegger started the Inner-City Games Foundation for at-risk youth in Los Angeles, California. The New York chapter of the foundation opened in 1995. A year later, we launched CampUs in conjunction with St. John’s University, in Jamaica, New York. CampUs was a unique summer program for children of the New York City Housing Authority developments.

In 2002, the entire organization changed its name to After-School All-Stars (ASAS), reflecting our evolving focus on academic and life achievement. Today, ASAS is a national organization of dedicated professionals that serves over 92,000 young people annually through comprehensive after-school and summer programs in 13 cities across the United States.

For more information about our national organization and our efforts in other cities, please visit www.as-as.org.

In June 2008, ASASNY and St. John’s University (STJ) were awarded two 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grants from the New York State Department of Education, totaling $6 million in renewable funding over five years. With the new 21st CCLC, ASASNY offers a 30-week continuous after-school program to two middle schools in Queens and a CampUs program for two weeks during the summer.
