Summer

CampUs
CampUs is a comprehensive academic/athletic summer camp program held annually on the campus of St. John’s University (STJ) that benefits 2,500 children, ages 7-13, from New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments and NYC Department of Homeless Services facilities.

The 2 two-week cohorts include academic sessions created and supervised by Dr. Richard Sinatra and led by New York State certified teachers. Pre and post tests have demonstrated improved skills based on NYS English Language Arts writing criteria.

Sports activities are led by STJ Division I coaches and athletes. Half of each day is devoted to literacy skills and the rest to recreation and socialization activities. The STJ School of Education curriculum includes in-class instruction and on-field training.

Each of the two-week programs culminates in a graduation ceremony. Ultimately, ASASNY students are engaged in academic, athletic and enrichment activities and on-going relationships that increase their confidence and encourage success in all areas of their lives — at home, in school and in the community.

21st CCLC CampUs
ASASNY also offers a two-week camp on the campus of St. John’s University for selected students from middle schools where after-school programs are provided during the school year: I.S. 192 and J.H.S. 217. Approximately 150 students participate in energizing athletics and engaging academic programs that keep them focused during the long summer vacation.

Summertimes
The 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grant also supports another ASASNY summer program, Summertimes, that offers 650 students comprehensive academic and athletic summer activities 40 hours a week for a period of 6 weeks. The respective students from P.S. 229, J.H.S. 216 and P.S. 313 also participate in various educational field trips each week, including 4 different trips to the St. John’s University Queens Campus.
